# What language skills do I need in Nicaragua?

Most volunteer/internship placements require basic to intermediate Spanish skills. English is rarely spoken in León. The language requirements are specified in each program description.

If you have little or no knowledge of Spanish, we recommend booking online Spanish lessons before your trip to Nicaragua and/or taking Spanish classes on-site. Please let us know your level of Spanish so we can consider it when planning your stay.
